The Bureau

Knox County established its Fire Prevention Bureau in 1984 to enforce applicable codes and to reduce the number and severity of blazes.

The mission of the Knox County Fire Prevention Bureau is to make Knox County a safer place to live, work or visit by protecting its residents and guests from the ravages of fire. We accomplish this by conducting life safety inspections of existing structures and new construction, developing proactive and diverse public education programs and maintaining an aggressive fire investigation program.

The Fire Bureau deploys a group of prevention specialist who hold responsibilities in:

  • Permit plans review
  • New Construction/existing facility inspections
  • Public fire safety education
  • Juvenile fire setters intervention programs
  • A smoke detector program

The Knox County Fire Prevention Bureau smoke detector program provides smoke detectors to resident who cannot afford them.
